These two Knights fall in love with the same noblewoman, Emilie. After several hundred lines of plot and dialogue, both men decide to honorably fight each other in a large arena for Emilie's hand in marriage. Prior to the dual, Arcite prays to the god of war, Mars. Palamon prays to the god of love, Venus. Both go into the fight with the expectation of winning. Geoffrey Chaucer in "A Knight's Tale" Headpiece: The Canterbury Tales is known as one of Geoffrey Chaucer's most famous works. His tales, and specifically " The Knight's Tale, " has a significant presence in modern media, especially in film. Many adaptations have been made based on his works; consider BBC's series The Canterbury Tales (TV Series) that takes a few of Chaucer's tales and gives them a modern twist 1. Chaucer's influence can be seen throughout modern day pop culture. However, Chaucer himself is rarely depicted in these adaptions, however, in the 2001 major motion picture A Knight's Tale, a fictitious version of Geoffrey Chaucer, played by British Actor Paul Bettany, takes center stage as a leading character 2. In the film, Chaucer is portrayed as a penniless, gambling poet. Paul Bettany's characterization of Chaucer certainly provides both a pleasant portion of comic relief and recognition of the era's most popular literature. Throughout the movie, Bettany's Chaucer makes references to his literary and poetic works, including The Book of the Duchess 3 and The Canterbury Tales.
How are the battles between Arcite/Palamon and William/Adehmar similar? How are they different? In what ways do "fate" and "the stars" influence the inevitable outcomes? Footnotes: 1. BBC's The Canterbury Tales is a 2003 mini tv series that provides a modern re-telling of six of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales including: "The Knight's Tale", "The Wife of Bath's Tale", "The Miller's Tale", "The Sea Captain's Tale", "The Pardoner's Tale", and "The Man of Law's Tale. " 2. Be aware that the fragments of Chaucer's personal life depicted in the movie are not legitimate representations of the real poet. There is no tangible evidence that the Chaucer was a gambler, though he did suffer financial hardship throughout certain periods of his life. 3. "The Book of the Duchess" is the earliest of Chaucer's major poems. Scholars argue that the poem was composed some time between 1368 and 1372. 4. A herald is an official messenger bringing news. In A Knight's Tale (2001), Chaucer serves as an announcer of sorts for William.

Of course, the whole storyline of The Canterbury Tales is moved forward by a group of pilgrims presenting themselves through stories. This is apparent in A Knight's Tale when William, Wat, Kate, and Roland exchange anecdotes of their pasts in order to help William devise a love letter to the noblewoman, Jocelyn. Chaucer writes down the pilgrims' narratives in written word, alluding to his future writing of The Canterbury Tales. At the end of the movie, Chaucer says, "I really should write all this down, " once again alluding to the future creation of "The Knight's Tale. This crowd-pleasing medieval adventure tale is very loosely inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales and mixes the anachronistic elements of modern-day rock music and colloquialisms with a period setting and characters. Heath Ledger stars as William Thatcher, a low-born 14th century squire who, in a fit of inspired spontaneity, replaces his deceased employer as the competitor at a jousting competition. Jousting is a pastime only permitted to knights, who are of noble birth, but Thatcher wins and decides to continue his new pursuits. With the help of his two fellow squire friends Wat and Roland (Alan Tudyk and Mark Addy) and none other than the gambling-addicted Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany), Thatcher has soon adopted a false identity and is winning one joust after another on his way to a championship in London. His victories inspire the affection of a female fan, Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon), and the ire of a competitor, Count Adehmar (Rufus Sewell), but Thatcher's ruse is threatened with exposure.
Certain elements in A Knight's Tale are particularly reflective of Chaucer's works. For example, the movie's title seems as if it could have come directly out of The Canterbury Tales. In addition, the characters in A Knight's Tale are, like those in The Canterbury Tales, on a type of pilgrimage. William, Roland, Wat, and Kate are all traveling back to London on a pilgrimage of their own. Although they aren't explicitly on a spiritual pilgrimage, it is evident that William's motivation to become a Knight comes from the notion that "a man can change his stars. " The reference to "stars" alludes to fate or destiny, but doesn't specifically state whether or not his fate is a spiritual one. More importantly, Chaucer serving as William's herald 4 in the jousting tournaments seems to consequentially narrate much of the movie, as if A Knight's Tale serves as some sort of prequel to The Canterbury Tales. The most evident reflection of The Canterbury Tales in A Knight's Tale is the interchange of tales between the pilgrims.
He introduces William at the beginning of each jousting tournament in an effort to enliven the spectators. A similarity to the film adaptation of Chaucer and the real poet is that both attempted to speak and write to entertain the commoners, those of lower nobility. 5. Essentially, an earthquake occurred after Arcite's victory and swallowed him. He died a slow and painful death as a result of his injuries.
