Qui lascia tanto spazio al mattatore Kirk Douglas, divo accentratore come pochi altri nel panorama della Hollywood classica, nel ruolo di un giornalista senza scrupoli disposto a rallentare le operazioni di salvataggio di un uomo intrappolato in una caverna pur di tenere "caldo" lo scoop. Brava anche la co-protagonista Jan Sterling nei panni della moglie insensibile e sprezzante, i due intessono una relazione nei canoni del noir accentuando sulla morbosità. La storia, sceneggiata dallo stesso Wilder, racconta dell'assurdo ed effimero effetto aggregante della tragedia privata venduta al pubblico, in cui si accorre a frotte come i batteri attorno ad una ferita per vendere zucchero filato, fare un giro in giostra e farsi intervistare. Nulla di più attuale, se consideriamo poi l'abnorme megafono della rete. Poi, quando tutto finisce e un velo pietoso cala sulla scena, tutti a casa, lo spettacolo è finito. Una grande parabola sul marciume mediatico con appendice morale sull'effetto autodistruttivo di questo cinismo sregolato.

How she acts becomes even more meaningful when we see her acting nice towards the rest of the crew after seeing the tape from her past. With Spike, I can't tell you why he's reckless and confident, I can't tell you why he was obsessed with finding Julia, I can't tell you why Julia means so much to him, and I don't even know why or what caused him to leave the crime syndicate. Because of this, every time they bring up Vicious, Julia, or the crime syndicate, I don't have anything to latch onto and say "I understand why this is important to Spike, " or "I know why he's reacting to this situation this way. " On the surface level, Spike, Faye, and Jet all have pretty in-depth and interesting backstories, but the only one I feel emotionally invested in is Faye's because I understand why it's important to her, and I understand how it affects her now, simply because they show how and why it affects her. That's the main thing I'm confused about- I feel like I should as emotionally invested in Spike and Jet as I am for Faye, but I feel like they haven't showed me why I should be invested.
